The Montana Mine was located and owned by local miners Dudley Varney, James Hooper, John Faulker, Duncan Cameron and Amos Franklin. It was the district's richest lode, with gold and silver values running an incredible $1,700 per ton of ore. The Montana was one of the only mines in the Yankee Fork district where there was more gold than silver. The owners did not erect a mill, but instead gouged the best grade ore out of the mine and sent it to Salt Lake City to be processed. When the water level in the Montana was reached in the mid 1880's, the owners closed the mine. All subsequent efforts to revive the property ended in bankruptcy. The Montana produced about $350,00 during its years of operation.
