The second largest province in Canada, Quebec is divided into 17 administrative regions, these are in turn divided into a total of 86 regional county municipalities or RCMs (municipalités régionales de comté, MRC). Then RCMs are broken down into local municipalities of various types and there are a total of 1,117.
In some cases certain areas do not belong to a RCM, for the purposes of Mindat the relevant ones are the city of Rouyn-Noranda, which is a Territory Equivalent to an RCM, abbreviated TE, Montreal, which is an urban agglomeration and administrative region of its own, and all municipalities of the Nord-du-Québec administrative region.
Prior to the implementation of this system Quebec was organized according to a county-township system and many localities in the past have been referenced according to this system. When possible the historic locality, according to county-township, is mentioned in the first line of the locality description.
