The largest province in Canada (east-central part), Quebec is divided into 17 administrative regions, these are in turn divided into a total of 86 regional county municipalities or RCMs (municipalités régionales de comté, MRC). Then RCMs are broken down into local municipalities of various types and there are a total of 1,117.
In some cases certain areas do not belong to a RCM and are designated as Territory Equivalent to an RCM, abbreviated TE. There are also Montreal and Quebec City which are urban agglomerations, Montreal and Laval which are administrative regions of their own, and the Nord-du-Québec administrative region which does not have regional county municipalities.
Prior to the implementation of this system Quebec was organized according to a county-township system and many localities in the past have been referenced according to this system. When possible the historic locality, according to county-township, is mentioned in the first line of the locality description.
