Пирамида (piramida)

An abandoned coal mine located at Billefjorden close to the pyramid-shaped mountain which is called Pyramiden (the pyramid). Mining started here by Sweden in 1910, and was later in 1927, sold to the Soviet Union. The russian coal company Trust Arktikugol (Russian: Арктикуголь) mined coal here until 1998. A large settlement and mining community which once had a population of about 1000 inhabitants is now an abandoned, deserted town. About 9 million tonn coal was produced here between 1955 and 1998.

Note to the minerallist:
Hoelite was found after a fire on coal in the Pyramiden Coal mine (Oftedahl 1929). It formed delicate yellow needles associated with chlorides and sulphur deposited by gases at a burning coalbed.
