Iran is divided into 31 ostanha (sing. ostan: provinces); the 31st province, Alborz, was created in June 2010. The provinces are subdivided into shahrestan (counties), which are in turn subdivided into bakhsh (districts).

Note: Westerners used to preferentially call the country "Persia" until 1935.

Description: The individual demantoid crystals from these localities can reach more than 5 cm. Even though the majority of crystals are much smaller, there are surprisingly many crystals over 2 cm, often giving nice matrix specimens. The crystals are rarely transparent, and the locality is of limited interest for the gem industry.

Description: Demantoid from the area near Bagh Borj has been known in the international gem market since 2001. There are several active operations, both in tunnels and open cuts. Individual demantoid crystals may reach up to 5 cm, but are normally much smaller. Crystals of more than 1.5 cm must be considered large for the locality. Gem crystals are normally much smaller. The color ranges from yellowish green to deep green.

Description: Submicroscopic crystals of an unusual complex REE-rich iron-titanate from the apatite-magnetite ore of the Chogart mine/Iran were proved to be davidite. Average calculated unit-cell composition from microprobe analyses, normalized to 38 oxygens, is (Ce0.38, La0.35) Σ0.73 (Y0.69, Ti13,20, Fe6,33, V0.43, Mn0.21, Mg0.09) Σ20.95O38. The mineral appears as traces and as small euhedral crystals representing a late-stage mineral phase in minute open spaces and finest fractures of the magnetite ore. The mineral is opaque and behaves totally isotropic in the reflected light. The reflectance is 18-6 % in air (546 nm)
