Iran is divided into 31 ostanha (sing. ostan: provinces); the 31st province, Alborz, was created in June 2010. The provinces are subdivided into shahrestan (counties), which are in turn subdivided into bakhsh (districts).
(Note: Westerners used to preferentially call the country "Persia" until 1935.)
