Large underground quarries worked for lacustrine tuff as dimension stone, much used in central Japan for garden walls. One enormous quarried cavern was used during WW2 for underground fighter plane assembly, and this is now open for tourism. There have been some problems with roof collapse, and houses lost to subsidence.
