The Bancroft District is an artificial designation based mostly on various guidebooks attempting to provide detailed directions to mineral collecting areas, many of which are great distances apart. For this reason, many dealers and collectors have chosen to use "Bancroft" as a generic name for minerals in the region, regardless of the actual township they were found in. Sabina (1986) is an excellent and authoritative guide with scientifically identified species included. Collectors should be aware that many species and or locality designations on their commercially obtained specimens have varying levels of accuracy.
Deposits in the Bancroft region range from mafic rocks through contact metamorphic deposits, marbles, through calcite vein deposits, syenites, granite pegmatites, nepheline syenites, etc. The variety of available minerals has made the Bancroft Region a popular mineral collecting area.
