The largest of the 3 iron mines in the Bangor area, all of which exploited sedimentary deposits precipitated as nodules within a cleaved mudstone, the Nant Ffrancon formation, that occurs widely across this area of north Wales.

First worked on a very limited scale in 1912, Penrhyn Mine was taken over by the Silurian Iron Ore Company, which had interests in a number of the north Wales iron mines (see Ystrad Mine) in 1913. Originally quarried at surface, by 1917, the majority of the 32 man workforce was employed underground, the maximum depth reaching about 126 feet below surface. Surface and underground working then alternated till 1920 and the mine was abandoned in 1921. Maximum production was about 200 tons of ore per week.

Like all of the Gwynedd iron mines, Penryn Mine had a high silica content, which rendered it unattractive to distant ironmasters and which helped contribut to the mine's ultimate failure. It was also contaminated with iron pyrites, which was removed by hand prir to shipping for smelting to, initally, Brymbro and Ruabon in north Wales, and subsequently, Swansea in south Wales.

In 1983, the dumping of material from road construction for the Bangor Bypass oblierated the site remains.
