Åker is the center of an historically important mining and metallurgical area in Sweden. 1584 is the first blast-furnace erected and during the coming decades it develop to the most important heavy armament industry in Sweden.

Skottvång Mines is the oldest and biggest group of iron mines active from 1200 to 1920, reaching a depth of 245 meters. Dating indicate that some "mining" could have taken place already in the 8th century.
