At some spots along the banks of the Saru river there are outcrops of a very peculiar fossiliferous sandstone of the Miocene Takinoue Formation whose dominant mineral constituent is lenticular grains of serpentine! Apart from the serpentine minerals, the other minerals present are minor amounts of detrital grains from a variety of source rocks, of no particular interest. Discovered in 1961.
