Mount Moliagul, approximately 200 km from Melbourne and 58 km due west from Bendigo, is a prominent outcrop of granitic rocks approximately 1.6 by 1.0 kilometres in area and 800 metres above the surrounding country. It is one of number of relatively small intrusions of granitic rocks in the area. A sub-economic deposit of molybdenum has been intermittently mined there since the early twentieth century.
