"Eagle County History," 1940, p. 72: "The first town or camp in this section was in Rock Creek and was started in the year 1879. All of the mines working at that time were on Battle Mountain. The principal ones were: the Belden, the Clifton, the Spirit and the Iron Mask. In addition to these were a number of prospects. The mine that made Gilman was the Spirit Mine which later ran into the Iron Mask ground. These mines were consolidated and were then known as the Iron Mask." "The Iron Mask mine was first owned by the 'Oyster Kings' of the United States, Mallory of Baltimore and Brown of Philadelphia."
