Ref.: www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/HCV/loihi-summary.html & /loihirocks.html. An active volcanic sea mount approximately 30 km SE of Hawaii Island, Hawaii Co., Hawaii, USA, in international waters. Major volcanic events during 1996 resulted in an approximate 300 meter decline in the summit, forming a major new crater. Deep diving was conducted as soon as practical to retrieve fresh geological samples, resulting in the identification of several mineral species.
