"History: Broken Hill Proprietary Co. began quarrying operation at Rapid Bay in 1938. The first quarry face opened was 170ft. above sea level in a gully below the Olivaster Mine. In 1941 a jetty was constructed and a plant was erected. 130 men were employed working 3 shifts per day. Production was commenced on 13 August 1942 and has continued non strop since then. In 1977 a total of 22 men were employed working a 5 day week of 8 hours per day."

B.H.P. Sold this quarry to Brighton Cement in 1981, at which point it had produced an approx 15,000,000 tonnes.
This quarry continued to be worked until 1988 when work was scaled down in favour of the company's Klein Point Quarry. And even though substantial reserves remain, the ship loading facilities have been dismantled and the quarry now remains unused.
