Situated at on the east side of the A4064 at Pontyrhyl, Llest Colliery mined House Coal and is recorded in 1880 under the ownership of the Llest Coal Company Limited. Production ceased in 1902.
Two capped shafts remain. A coal wagon set on rails on the west side of the road (SS907894) commemorates nineteen named men and boys killed here in an explosion on 18th August 1899. The memorial also commemorates all miners who lost their lives at the Garw Valley's collieries.
Marcasite from Llest Colliery is recorded in the Natural History Museum's Mineralogy specimen database (BM.1926,223 & 224).
Llest & Pontyrhyl and Lluest & Pont-y-rhyl are alternative spellings. The former pair appear on maps contemporaneous with the colliery's working, the latter pair appear on later editions of the Ordnance Survey map for this area.
