This is certainly the most unusual locality for crystalized quartz in New Jersey. A Horse farm on the shores of Paulinskill lake has exposed a large ledge of paleozoic Martinsburg formation shale, in which a number of long, longitudinal milky quartz veins cut it, from a few centimeters wide to over 2 feet. In these veins, many pockets have been found, from hand-size to 2 by 4 feet. Often, these pockets are lined with complex, unusual quartz xls. up to 3 inches, but many are very iron-stained, and of inferior quality. What makes these interesting though, is that they show complex hexagonal and almost scalenohedral modifications, with interesting growth patterns and a lot of faulted/re-healed xl. growth. The people at the Horse farm seem friendly about collecting, as long as no really heavy equipment is used that could disturb the horses in a nearby paddock. Good diggin's on the ground too!
