Located 145km N of Adelaide between Port Wakefield and Snowtown.
Salt has been produced at Lochiel since 1912 from a 1500 ha inland salt lake. Annual winter rains dissolve the accumulated salts in the lake from which the resulting brine was pumped into three 25 ha crystallisers.
The lake is the largest of a system of Quaternary Holocene saline lakes draining an area to the east of the Barunga Ranges and extending ~30 km north of Lochiel.
Cheetham Salt Ltd. produced 4000 t in 1999. The "Salt Works" closed in 2000 but some salt is still harvested here.
