Fostung deposit (Fostung property; St. Leonard Lake Occurrence), Espanola, Foster Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, Canada

Skarn-type tungsten deposit, discovered in 1981. Located in Foster Twp. (Concession III, Lot 8) approximately 8km SE of Espanola, Ontario. The Fostung property consists of two contiguous mining leases covering 485ha. The mining leases are valid until October 2010 and March 2011 at which time they may be renewed.

This occurrence is the same one called the "St.Leonard Lake Occurrence" described by Ann Sabina in her book.

Modern exploration activity of the Fostung tungsten property began in 1966, when local prospectors Vernon Piispanen and Taisto Tamminen discovered a one-foot wide quartz vein carrying some chalcopyrite and molybdenite shows. They staked five original claims and shortly thereafter, five additional claims. During the next 20 years, the property was explored by five different companies. Texas Gulf first optioned the property from 1966 to 1967. They conducted geological mapping, geophysics and completed six diamond drillholes totaling 825m. Cerro Corporation optioned the property in 1970. They carried out a surface sampling and trenching program and dropped the property shortly thereafter. VanGulf Exploration optioned the property in 1971. They further mapped the property, ran geophysics and drilled two more core holes totaling 734m. In 1972, a number of Vangulf properties, including Fostung, were acquired by St. Joseph Explorations Ltd. St Joseph drilled six core holes totaling 1,411m and did preliminary metallurgical testing on the core rejects. They dropped the property in 1973 after failing to define the desired high-grade mineralization.
