Route 1 Road Cut, Woolwich, Sagadahoc Co., Maine, USA

Road cut though granite, granite pegmatite, and metamorphic rocks on up-hill grade on Route 1. GPS Marker shows area where dumortierite has been found in granite pegmatite stringers. The outcrop is a road cut and not an outcrop on a lawn or an old bedrock location in the middle of the road. Dumortierite is very scarce and often obscured by road dust or dark-colored vegetable matter on the rock surfaces. Park off the busy main highway. Minerals are of academic interest only. Copper minerals were generally in cracks in rock downhill from the GPS marker. Acid rain and weathering has removed almost all traces of interesting specimens since road widening occurred in the 1960s.
