Placer deposit of gold that has been mined several times since its discovery in 1556. The bedrock of the Madre de Dios area is made of metamorphic and crystaline rocks of Paleozoic age all of the part of the Bahía Mansa Metamorphic Complex. These rocks are covered with thick layers of glacial gravel from the Tertiary. Gold eroded from the gravel have deposited in nearby streams, thus giving origin to the placer deposit.
The placer deposits of the area occur in three districts; the Madre de Dios-Llipe District and the Pureo District. There are at least 13 known placers.
Located east the town of Máfil (about 30 km northeast of Valdivia).
The deposit was discovered by Spaniards in 1556 but was not mined extensivelly until the late 19th century. From 1898 to 1936 a total of 2.6 tones of gold were produced. The deposits are currently being by prospected Global Gold corporation.
Global Gold Corporation held (Dec 2007) approximately 49,000 acres of leases under the Madre de Dios property.
