Variscite deposit (amatrice is a name for gem variscite).
The variscite occurs as nodules along strong fissures in a crushed and shattered zone which parallels the bedding of upper Carboniferous limestone. The limestone grades upward into a quartzite which is barren of variscite. Variscite, wardite and probably other similar phosphates comprise the nodules, together with a great abundance of chalcedony; much of the variscite is impregnated with chalcedony. Limonite and crushed chert fragments are abundant.
