Centre of a gold mining area.
One of the most significant Victorian era boomtowns in Australia.

Alluvial gold was discovered in 1851, leading to a gold rush.
Gold mining has continued to the present date with a main mine operating (owned by Castlemaine Goldfields Ltd) and large deposits remaining deep underground.
