Bertha prospect (Hecla; Red Rose prospects), Nipple Butte, Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan District, Prince of Wales-Outer Ketchikan Borough, Alaska, USA
Latitude: 55°17'26"N
Longitude: 132°24'3"W
Longitude: 132°24'3"W
Geology: Brooks (1902), who did not visit these claims, asserts that the deposits are identical to those at the Khayyam Mine (CR129). He describes them as three parallel veins with chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. No deposits have since been mentioned at or near these claims. Barrie (1984), who studied the nearby Khayyam Mine, also mapped the likely area of these claims, but apparently did not identify any mineral deposits there. Barrie mapped the rocks in the vicinity as felsic to mafic schist, mostly of volcanic origin, that is part of the Late Proterozoic and Cambrian Wales Group.
Workings: No indication of work beyond claims staked prior to 1902. Claims staked intermittently on the Khayyam Mine over the years may have extended to this site.
Age: There is no modern confirmation of a deposit on these claims. If one exists, it is probably similar to the Late Proterozoic or Cambrian deposit at the nearby Khayyam Mine (CR129).
Commodities (Major) - Cu
Development Status: None
Deposit Model: Besshi massive-sulfide deposit? (Cox and Singer, 1986; 24b).
