Fowlkes Prospect, Sunny Cove, West Arm of Cholmondeley Sound, Cholmondeley Sound, Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan District, Prince of Wales-Outer Ketchikan Borough, Alaska, USA

Latitude: 55°16'0"N
Longitude: 132°17'52"W
Location: The location of this old prospect is uncertain. It is probably northwest of Sunny Cove, within a mile or so of the center of section 23, T. 76 S., R. 86 E. This may be the prospect described by Brooks (1902) about two miles to the east (CR136).
Geology: The only published description of the Fowlkes prospect is by Wright and Wright (1906). Chalcopyrite occurs in a mineralized band about 12 feet wide in schist and gneiss. The prospect was explored by a 95-foot crosscut. There is some surface alteration (oxidation?) of the sulfide ore. The rocks in the area are part of the Wales Group of Late Proterozoic and Cambrian age (Eberlein and others, 1983; Brew, 1996).
Workings: Explored by a 95-foot crosscut.
Alteration: Unspecified surface alteration of sulfides (oxidation?).
