Location: Beach and dune sands near Moffet Point. Coordinates are for beach between localities of the two richest samples.
Geology: Peninsula is covered by sand dunes as much as 100 ft. (30 m) high; the outer beach is broad and smooth. Wind sorting has resulted in erratically distributed magnetite stringers throughout area. Beach and dune sands are derived from glacial deposits and erosion of a largely volcanic terrain. The sands contain local concentrations of titaniferous magnetite.
Workings: Concentrates from 16 auger holes and shovel samples of beach matierial (with one exception) contained 10 percent or more titaniferous magnetite; most also contained traces of franklinite. Two samples contained more than 100 lbs iron (45 kg) and 25 lbs TiO2 (11 kg) per cubic yard (0.84 cubic m) of material in place. All others were much lower grade.
