The First Hit Gold Mine borders the Menzies town site to the west. It was discovered in 1928 by Richard Duckworth and John Allan, more than thirty years after the original gold discoveries nearby.
It has a simple ownership history. Duckworth and Allan got about developing what would soon prove to be a very rich mine. In 1934 the mine was floated locally with 150 000 pounds capital. 16 000 pounds was used to purchase and erect a five head battery. The directors are J.L. Paton, R. Falconer and R. Duckworth. About twenty men are employed.
The mine either closed or was at a low ebb during the World War Two years. Tributers are noted in 1946. The company took back operations in 1947. Shortly after the battery was sold to the Victory Exploration Syndicate of Coolgardie, and it was removed. The lease was sold soon after to Robinson and Dewar (surnames). March 1950, R. Sanders bought out Dewar's share.
A 65 metre deep open pit was developed on the oxide resource across 1996 to 1997 by Paddington Gold, who carted the ore to their processing plant near Broad Arrow.
Historic underground production down to 300 metres below the surface amounts to 165 000 tonnes at 32.0 g/t yielding 169 756 ounces. Recent open pit production is 325 000 tonne of ore at 2.40 g/t yielding 25 078 ounces of gold. The remaining resource is 102 300 tonnes at 3.75 g/t yielding 12 349 ounces.
The lode is divided into two being First Hit and the more southerly
Queensland Menzies (this will be loaded separately), the second portion of the lode off-set by a west-east striking fault. Mineralisation occurs as a south plunging quartz-biotite zone, hosted by interbedded mafic amphibolite and talc-tremolite-chlorite ultramafic schists.
Gold is developed in a series of short (30 metre) long quartz lodes, with sinistral and dextral shear movement. The veins are elongated and plunge 20 to 30 degrees south south-east.
Sulphidic minerals are galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite.
The site contains two abandoned pits, a large tailings heap to the north-west, and the 1955 dated Menzies state battery. The battery is not open to the public.
There is also a First Hit Gold Mine near the Riverina Station in the Menzies Shire.
