The range represents the water divide between the basins of River Angren (aka Akhangaran or Ohangaron) to the north (Uzbekistan) and River Syr Darya to the south (Tajikistan and Uzbekistan). It forms also the northern boundary of the western part of the Ferghana Valley (Tajikistan). The northern part of the Kurama Range is adjacent to the Chatkal Range and creates the impression that the Kurama Range is a spur of the Chatkal Range, however the Kurama Range is a single mountain system of the western Tien Shan. The southwestern part of the Kurama Range, called Karamazar, is an important polymetallic ore district known since antiquity. The nearby Mogoltau Mountains, located further southwest just to north of the city of Khujand (Sughd, Tajikistan), are close to the Kurama Range (and especially to the Karamazar) and here considered as an appendix to the main range.
The average height of the Kurama Range is 2000 m, the highest point is Mount Boboiob (3745 m). The Mogoltau Mountains extend approximately 40 km, and their highest point is Mount Muzbek at 1624 m.
The Kurama Range is geologically composed of predominantly eroded Upper Paleozoic rocks with sedimentary interlayers and intrusions. The central and eastern parts of the nearby Mogaltau Mountains consist of igneous rocks–granodiorites, and sedimentary Paleozoic limestones are concentrated almost exclusively in the western part.
The great wealth in ores of this mountain area was known since antiquity and some clear signs of ancient mining are still visible today. The presence of these signs and the geographical names of some places (Altyn Topkan means "mine where gold was found", Akhangaran or Ohangaron means "blacksmiths", Kurgashinkan means "lead mine", Miskan means "copper mine") helped geologists and prospectors in the pre-Soviet and Soviet era to rediscover the ancient mines and discover new important polymetallic deposits.

Since it is difficult/impossible to get coordinates on most of the localities in this ore field, these cannot be registered until the already registered mines get their proper coordinates.
