Narrowdale Mine (incl. Gateham Farm), Alstonfield, Staffordshire, England, UK

UK Grid Reference: SK124574
Latitude: 53°6'48"N
Longitude: 1°48'53"W
Note:
There is some confusion in the references regarding the precise location of this mine and its relationship with other workings in this area. Ford (2000) writes: "Narrowdale Mine (SK124574) lay some 3 km east of Ecton, close to Dovedale, and produced earthy iron ore and calcite from shafts close to the Gateham-Alstonefield road (SK121569)", suggesting that the old workings in Narrwodale and the shafts along the road were different sections of the same mine, although they are about 300 m apart, which is a very large distance in view of the small size of the setts of most mines in this area. The earlier paper (Ford et al., 1993) lists Narrowdale and Gateham (probably Gateham Farm, since a village of this name does not exist) as separate localities, but with imprecise grid references (SK1157 and SK1257, respectively) that plot in the middle of nowhere and it thus remains unclear whether the references do actually refer to the same workings. To add to the confusion, the fields on both sides of the Gateham-Alstonfield road are dotted with traces of old workings, but the grid reference (Ford, 2000) does not unambiguously mark anyone of them.

Therefore, we use the grid reference that plots into Narrowdale, where a mine of this name is expected to be located. Until further evidence is found that there was indeed another working in the area and where it was located, Grantham Farm remains included in this entry. The mineralization reported for the individual occurrences is the same.
