Clay Cross mine, Milltown, Ashover, Derbyshire, England, UK

A somewhat problematical location.

Ford et al. 1993 note that "Fluorite approaching the character of Blue John has been found at Clay Cross mine, Milltown, Ashover", but whilst providing many other specific peak district localities, do do not provide a locality for this mine. The name does not seem to appear in other references on Peak District mining.

Clay Cross is a former coal and iron mining town in NE Derbyshire. In 1925 the Ashover Light Railway came into operation, mainly to carry minerals to Clay Cross from the Clay Cross Company’s own quarries & mines at Ashover, Fallgate and Milltown. It is probable that Clay Cross mine refers to a mine owned by the Clay Cross Company rather than a mine specifically named as such.

The grid reference given here is for Milltown itself.
