Katzenbuckel, Eberbach, Odenwald, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland
Cylindrical basalt dome with a diameter of about 1 km, protruding from a plateau of bunter sandstone. It represents a volcanic pipe, intruded into Triassic and Jurassic sedimentary rocks that were completely removed by erosion. It mostly consists of sanidine nephelinite, except for a promontory on its eastern slope, the so-called Michelsberg, which is composed of sodic shonkinite.
The rocks are exposed in outcrops and in several quarries, most of which are long abandoned. The most recent operation was in a quarry on Michelsberg hill; it was abandoned in 1974.
