Sødal quarries, Kalkheia, Kristiansand, Vest-Agder, Norway
Sødal quarries are located in the hills above the Sødal farm just outside the Kristiansand city centre. The area is today called Kalkheia. After a city fire in 1892 it was decided to rebuild the city with bricks rather than the usual wood. A marble layer here were exploited for calcite to be burned to construction lime. There are still an old lime oven there. (Olav Revheim information 2010, see messageboard at http://www.mindat.org/mesg-11-166533.html )
There are several small quarries: Kongegruva, Langgruva, Sommergruva, Vintergruva, Øvre Pettersgruva og Nedre Pettersgruva.
Skarn minerals have been found at the contact between the marble and the gneiss
.
