An underground copper mine, the Sheldon Mining Co. began operation in 1853. Two shafts were sunk, one on the Isle Royale lode, the other on the Portage lode. An adit was also driven to one of the shafts. Initial work consisted of eight miners and three surfacemen. Hoisting from the shafts was done by horse drawn whims and kibble buckets. The ore was rich in copper and usually accompanied by silver. In 1864, the company merged with the Columbian Mining Co to form the Sheldon and Columbian Copper Co. Some copper and silver can be found here.
