Former gypsum mine with "Marienglas" (variety of gypsum).

In 1775 construction of the gallery entrance began with the intention of mining copper slate. Although no copper slate was found, a gypsum deposit was found in 1778. Gypsum was mined underground until 1903. In 1784 one of the largest and most beautiful gypsum crystal caverns in Europe was discovered. About ten meters in diameter, it was almost completely covered with colorless and transparent gypsum crystals called "Marienglas".

Located about 1.5 km NW of Friedrichroda.
