Barros Cassal is a small town located about 30 Km south, south west of Soledade, Rio Grande do Sul. An area of amygdaloidal basalt that produces a type of chalcedony geode commonly lined with small quartz crystals and occasionally associated with other minerals. Most of these geodes are rather small, rarely exceeding 7 or 8 cm and have a distinctive "feathered" pattern in the chalcedony that comprises the "skin" of the geodes. They go by the trade name as mini cocos. Over the years hundreds of thousands, possibly more than a million of them have been collected and cut and polished and sold to markets in the USA, Europe and other countries.

3 valid minerals.

Detailed Mineral List:

Goethite
Formula: α-Fe3+O(OH)
Mogánite ?
Formula: SiO2
Quartz
Formula: SiO2
Quartz var. Agate
Description: Rare at the locality. Occasionally occupying small parts of chalcedony geodes (feather "agates").
Quartz var. Chalcedony
Formula: SiO2
Description: Geodes with peculiar patterns (feather "agates") that are the result of the intergrowth of two types of chalcedony: quartzine (or length-slow chalcedony) and length-fast chalcedony.
Quartz var. Quartzine
Formula: SiO2
Description: Identified in polarized light microscopy. Major compound in so-called "feather agates" (which do not qualify as agate proper), where it is intergrown with length-slow chalcedony.
