Petrognano quarry, San Romano Garfagnana, Garfagnana, Lucca Province, Tuscany, Italy

Cava di Petrognano, San Romano Garfagnana, Garfagnana, Lucca, Toscana, Italia

The area and the quarry is localized near the boundary of the north-east territory of San Romano Garfagnana municipality near Petrognano Village in Garfagnana. The litologies interested by this actually abandoned quarry, are jurassic basaltic rocks also known (old terminology) as Diabasi. In this area these rocks can be found massive or as interesting "pillow lavas". These basalltic "islands" are surrounded by ophiolitic breccias. The pillows show the nature of lavic effusions that occurred in Upper Jurassic in oceanic areas. In the cavities and fractures of these rocks are found some interesting minerals.
