Sudan is divided into 25 wilayat (states; sing. wilayah).
NOTE: A political referendum on January 2011 led to a split into a northern Sudan and a southern Sudan.
The 10 states that will leave (northern) Sudan are Central Equatoria, East Equatoria, Jungoli, Lakes, North Bahr-al-Ghazal, Unity, Upper Nile, Warap, West Bahr-al-Ghazal and West Equatoria. The official secession is scheduled for 9 July 2011.
