Fe deposit (banded ironstone).
Deposits here were worked at least 42,000 years ago for red ochres (hematite) and specularite for use in rock paintings during the Middle Stone Age.
Iron ore from the deposit has been smelted for its iron content since around 400AD.
The Ngwenya mine complex includes the Lion Cave site (43,000 years old), Stag Mine and Castle Mine.
