French department (formerly called "Gévaudan") located in the southern "Massif Central". It can be divided into 4 main areas:
- Cevennes (to the east) are mountains composed of micaschists with many granitic intrusions (like the Mont Lozère granite)
- Margeride (to the north) is a large plateau situated on a huge laccolite of a porphyroïd granite
- Causses (to the south-west) are large plateaux too but situated on liassic and jurassic limestones
- Aubrac (to the west) is a large basaltic flow above hills around Marvejols that are composed of a metamorphic serie (miscellaneous gneisses and amphibolites).
