An ancient mine. Covering over four acres, stream-tin was worked here from alluvial gravels in the 1500s, the Stannary records showing dues being paid in 1539, and from nearby Parford Wood (SX 713 902) in 1583.

Described in 1789 as "a vast hollow excavated through a succession of ages by miners", a number of lodes were revealed on reaching bed-rock. A mining set was granted at the north end of the pool to work these sometime prior to 1841, with two shafts driven to 40ft and drives on the lodes showing tin, with 2-13% copper.

Working recommenced in 1846 as Wheal St. Ann, the main shaft being 34 fathoms deep in 1848. However, little more appears to have been done and the workings soon flooded and returned to a pool, with the equipment being sold in 1849.
