(Vosges, Lorraine, France)
This is the Vosges department which belongs to the Lorraine region. It was named for the Vosges mountains that occupy a large part of its territory. The Vosges mountains, however, cover a much larger area. They form a north-south trending range of about 100 km length, bordering the upper Rhine valley to the west, and extend into three regions: the eastern valleys belong to the Alsace region (Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments), the west to the Lorraine region (Vosges department) and the south and southwest to the Franche-Comté region (Haute-Saône and Territoire de Belfort departments). Therefore, the respective locality lists should be checked for additional Vosges Mts entries.
