Loire, Rhône-Alpes, France

Département de la Loire - 42

French department (formerly called "Forez") located east of the "Massif Central", between Auvergne and the Rhône Valley. The Loire River traverses the department from south to north in a graben called "Plaine du Forez" (Forez plain) between two horsts: "Monts du Forez" (Forez Mountains) to the west and "Monts du Beaujolais-Lyonnais" (Beaujolais-Lyonnais Hills) to the east. In the south, "Monts du Pilat" (Pilat Mountains) overhang the Gier Valley that runs through the coal basin of Saint-Etienne.
