Following the reorganisation of 1996, the Unitary Authority of Powys was formed from the administrative county of Powys plus a small part of the administrative county of Clwyd (also once part of the traditional county of Denbighshire).The administrative county of Powys (named after the old Welsh kingdom of Powys that occupied roughly the same area) was itself only formed during the 1974 administrative reorganisation from the traditional counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire that date back to the middle ages.
