Perhaps one of the most mineralogically and certainly geologically diverse parts of Ireland.
To the west is the internationally significant geological region of Connemara. Its geology is as varied as it is complicated, and there are many descriptive publications on its geology.
Of more interest to mineral collectors are the southern granites along the north shore of Galway Bay which are heavily enriched with fluorine. Purple fluorite is commonly found in hydrothermal veins through shrinkage cracks in the rock.
To the east and south of the county, the lower carboniferous limestones dominate and host many small and in some cases large (Tynagh Mine) Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits.
