Pacific Tungsten Co. Mine 2, Darwin, Darwin District, Inyo Co., California, USA

Latitude: 36°16'12"N
Longitude: 117°34'40"W
A former Tungsten mine, 0.8 miles E from Darwin, in sec. 19, T19S, R41E, MDM.

Tungsten ore has been reported in the area since 1915, but there was no
mining for Tungsten until the early 1940’s, when Tungsten was needed because of WW II.
In 1940 Frank Watkins, C.W. Fletcher and others organized the Darwin Consolidated Tungsten Company.
In 1941 E.L. Cord and others formed the Pacific Tungsten Company which leased 23 mining claims from the Darwin Consolidated Tungsten Company.

The Pacific Tungsten Company operated in the 1940’s (WW II) and 1950’s (Korean war) a number of mines in this area, like the St Charles, Hayward, Durham and Fernando mines and others. Some were just named after the operator. Therefore there are several mines with the name of “Pacific Tungsten Co.”

The ore was treated in a gravity-concentrating plant near Keeler.

Corrected description and position N36.26986 W117.57787 by Richard Muster, taken at remains of mining activities in the year 2009 using an Ashtech MM6 device.
