The Karoonda CK4 meteorite fell in South Australia on 25 November 1930. Several stones were recovered within a couple of weeks. The total mass recovered was 41.73 kg, the largest a 3.2 kg stone. Karoonda was the first of only two observed falls of the meteorites now known as the CK (Karoonda-like) Chemical Group of Carbonaceous Chondrites. Indeed, while over 200 CK meteorites have been recovered - mostly from the hot and cold deserts of Africa, Australia and Antarctica - Karoonda remains the most massive CK meteorite recovered as of November 2013.
Appearances of CK chondrites are dominated by their high volume of matrix ( ~75 vol%). Chondrules represent only 10-15 vol% while metallic iron is rare.
