Haye Valley Mine (West Wheal Callington; Coombelawn Mine; Smith's Venture; incl. Wheal Elizabeth), Callington, Callington District, Cornwall, England, UK

Latitude: 50°30'8"N
Longitude: 4°20'7"W
A small lead and zinc mine which worked at least two NS-trending lodes that cross the valley southwest of Haye Mill. Alternatively known as Coombelawn Mine or Smith's Venture, it was started before 1825 but had to be abandoned in that year due to the death of most of its adventurers. When it was reworked around 1845, it included Wheal Elizabeth, another small working which is now obscured but was probably located a little further downstream. The mine was reworked again as West Wheal Callington in 1851-1852, and as Haye Valley Mine in 1862-1864 and 1870-1874. During the latter periods, it mainly produced black tin, most of which came from alluvial workings.

Two lodes are mentioned for the sett. One of them carried galena which gave way to copper ores at depth, the other carried sphalerite that was impregnated with copper ores. They were opened up from two shafts, one on each side of the valley, and from an adit driven into the eastern slope. When the mine was abandoned in 1825, the workings were 21 fms deep below adit. The grid reference marks the approximate location of the more northerly shaft.

During the years 1862-1864 and 1870-1874, Haye Valley Mine raised 25 tons of black tin. The output of earlier workings is not recorded.
