This property was actively worked by Messrs. O'Brien and Fowler, of Ottawa, during 1925 and 1926, and is the largest feldspar operation conducted in the district.
The mine lies on the top of a high ridge above the Mattawa river, and is approached by a bush road of about 4 miles. The distance to Mattawa station, on the Canadian Pacific railway, is 6 miles. Shipment to rail was by sleigh in winter and by truck in summer.
The deposit consists of a large dyke of pink spar of good quality and
containing less in the way of mineral impurities than most other deposits
in the district. Black mica is present in small amount in medium-sized
crystals, and the dyke also carried considerable euxenite, one of the radioactive, rare-element minerals. It was worked by two pits, an upper and a lower, the spar being taken out in each case by a system of benching.
The lower pit measures 100 by 18 by 35 feet deep, and the upper one, 100
by 25 by 20 feet deep. The two pits have a difference in elevation of about 35 feet. A production of 2,500 tons is reported. (Spence 1932)
In pegmatite dyke cutting biotite-hornblende gneiss.
Granite pegmatite. Located on Concession III, Lot 29.
A dike consisting mainly of feldspar and quartz contains euxenite in masses from pea size up to a diameter of five inches.
