This mining area is adjacent to Mandalay-Mogok road (1,365 meters above sea level). In 1999 at least half a dozen open-pit MGE-joint venture companies were in operation, mining mainly rubies and sapphires from the alluvium. Some of these rubies and blue sapphires appear dull, lacking in luster, but their appearance may be improved of they are properly heat-treated. Good quality star rubies and star sapphires found together with spinels and schorl are frequently recovered in the same area. In April 1999 the mining operations were expanded and gem production increased. By 2005 this gem deposit was depleted. - Ted Themelis (2008) Gems and Mines of Mogok
