The Kohinoor open pit is 200 metres west of the Great Northern Highway, and approximately 45 kilometres north of Cue, or 10 kilometres north of Tuckanarra. It is located opposite the northern entrance track to the Reedy's Goldfield, and is not signposted. It is an isolated gold mine, not part of a larger goldfield. The only historic information found was the Golden Pole Company from Kalgoorlie took an option over the mine in 1908, but then abandoned it after six months. The present open pit dates from modern mining.

Gold mineralisation is located on the contact between banded iron formations and amphibolite (meta-basalts), associated with steep west south-west plunging ore shoots, and controlled by shear zones orientated north-west to south-east. It is associated with biotite alteration, pyrite and pyrrhotite sulphides. Near surface oxide gold is associated with north-west to south-east trending quartz veins in amphibolite.
