Lake Argyle Zebra Stone 1; Snappy Gum Ridge; Zebra Stone 1 openpit

The mine is located about half-way down the eastern shoreline of Lake Argyle, in an area known as Grass Castle Plain, and more specifically on Snappy Gum Ridge.

It has been worked by the Read family for 25 years, is the largest producer of zebra rock in the region, and produces the typical white and brown banded stone known to collectors.

The exposed beds are covered with a thin coating of brown clay rich material that requires removal. Much is by hand-mining and is a labour intensive exercise employing up to eight people during the mining (dry) season. Approximately 1t of high quality zebra stone is removed by boat after each mining season.
