Opened in the 1890s by the Cardiff Collieries Ltd, by the outbreak of World War 1 there were 2,330 men employed here.
During the early 1920's No. 3 pit was sunk to mine the Nos. 2 and 3 Rhondda house-coal seams.
Total output reached its peak in 1935 when 700,000 tons was produced.
The colliery was closed in December 1961.
Whilst an area of unlandscaped tips (ST138917) on top of the Bryn are accessible by the track from Llanbradach Fawr, the 'right sort' of ironstone nodules are uncommon (August 2003), but all the listed minerals could be found.
